Failure Audit - MSSQLSERVER EventID 18456

Just recently (Today only... with no previous cases) im receiving errors on my SQL servers. I run Sharepoint Portal Servers x 2 (clustered) and 2x SQL Servers (clustered). The 2 sql servers are SHR3 and SHR4, the SQL's are SQL1 and SQL2. The cluster for SHR3 and SHR4 is "SPS", the cluster for SQL1 and SQL2 is "SQLCLUSTER". the error is as follows

Source : MSSQLSERVER
Category : (4)
Type : Failure Audit
Event ID: 18456
User DOMAIN\SHR3$
Computer: SQLCLUSTER
Description :
Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\SQL3$'. (CLIENT: xxx.xx.xxx.ip)

this is happening every 60 seconds, and it is for both servers, SHR3 and SHR4. Also what is SHR3$ ?? I cannot find that account anywhere, why does it have a $?

Also our Sharepoint Server forces us to type DOMAIN\USERNAME rather than just USERNAME then password. Whenever i try to login to sharepoint portal via web address, i have to type the domain then \ and then my username. Also it asks for my password like 10 times throughout the process of getting to the place i need to go.
