I have always wondered, and couldn't fully figure out, what SQL Server really is and what can it do.

(Microsoft) SQL Server is a program that runs in the background on a windows based computer. This program allows you to create use and manage databases and tables inside of databases using the SQL standard -- which is basically how you "talk" to the server using various methods (including an application you design, a command window, a website, etc).

Microsoft SQL is probably the most commonly used database engine for windows based web servers and another variation of the SQL standard called mySQL is commonly used on Linux/Unix/*nix systems and web servers.

For more info click the links above, microsoft has a very large and this-product-is-so-exciting-how-could-we-live-without-it explanation on their website :)

Here is a link to a free trial of MSSQL Server 2000. I would reccomend installing it and trying it out if for nothing else you can get some experience creating tables and running queries.
