Replication on W2KP

I have an application which was developed on SQL 2000. I wanted to
experiment with setting up live replication (Transaction based), so I
took a snapshot of my database to put on the developer editions of SQL
2000 server which are running on my portable and desktop computers,
both of which are running W2K professional.

Using the wizard to "publish" my database, I wind up with an error
saying that the computer cannot be set up as a distribution server
(error 14114).

Must I use a server version of windows do "publish" a database for
replication?

What about subscriptions?
