for best preformance should i
set protocols to tcpip only or
tcpip, named pipes and tcpip over named pipes

How do you connect from your application(s)?

I have tcpip enabled....not a problem
i was just wondering if is should also
Enable Named pipes

with tcpip over named pipes

Basicly Because i do not know....
What is the best Performance and or Practices

What is the best Performance and or Practices
Best practice, optimize your queries. Return only the data that is needed.
Avoid stuff like select * from FOO.

Network protocol will be one of the smaller performance tweaks you can make.
