SQL Server 2K Linked Access 97 Server not working

An Access 97 linked server in SQL Server 2K has recently stopped
working. In Enterprise Manager, the following error message appears
when attempting to view the list of tables in the linked server:

Error 7399:OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'
IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ].

This linked server has not been used recently and in that time Win2K
SP4 and SQL Server 2K SP4 have both been applied. We now need to use
this linked server on a regular basis so any help will be much
appreciated.

Check out in master..sysservers how the server is set up. Pay particular
attention to the providerstring column.

Or just drop the server, and set it up a new.

Also, verify that the connect string you use works from a regular client
as well.

The providerstring column is set to NULL in master...sysservers

I created the linked server exacltly as specified here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...qd_12_6a44.asp
For Access 97 it appears that the providerstring field is left empty.
The database is unsecured, so I also mapped a SQL Server user to the
Access Admin account as described in the MSDN page.

I have dropped and created the server several times now.

The Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 provider works OK from a VB6 application on
a PC but there are no other client applications installed on the server
itself so I am unable to verify connectivity from an alternative source.

Exactly where is the Access database located? Is it on the SQL Server
machine? If it is not, under which Windows account is SQL Server running?
To be able to access network resources, SQL Server must be running
under a domain account, not under Local System.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I have not had a chance to follow up
your suggestion until today. The database is on the same machine as the
SQL Server and the System account has rights to the directory.
Nevertheless, I restarted SQL Server with a domain account and I am
now able to access the linked server! I have no idea why this worked.
