what is the true definition of catalog table?

We hear about catalog table in documentation but is this the same as
database schema?

What is the definiation of catalog table?

What does it pertain to?

Thanks

There's probably a formal ANSI SQL definition of "catalog" (I don't
know) - in the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views it seems to mean what MSSQL
calls a database. But in practice, many people use "system catalog",
"catalog tables" etc as a general term to mean any system tables which
store metadata about the database, such as sysobjects, syscolumns and
so on.
