A very strange bug. www.monkeyclaus.org is run by a cms I'm developing. One of types of users we allow is "justTestingTheSite", a type of user I developed to give demo's to prospective clients. The purpose of this level of security is to let someone log in and see everything as if they were root, and yet not be able to update or delete anything, as they have no real priveledges at all. I just logged in as root and created such an...

I have a small script with PHP that queries a MySQL database to pull out one row, where I want to be able to access each of the columns separately. I have tried several different variations and am able to get the entire row to print, but when I attempt to access the individual columns I get an error. Here is what I have so far: if (isset($_POST)): $link = mysql_connect('...','...','...'); mysql_select_db("...");

I have a webserver through Rackspace. I create a domain. I create an FTP user. I upload some files. I create a database called testOfSetupScript and then I create a database user named setup. I write some PHP code which should, I think, be able to to auto create the tables. The SQL looks like this:

Are there any benchmarks on how much an extra, unneeded VARCHAR, CHAR, INT, BIGINT, TEXT or MEDIUMTEXT slows down a database call with MySql? PostGre info would also be useful. I'm trying to explain to some friends the utility of making database calls return only needed data. As an example of what I'm talking about, suppose we had a database table sort of like this:

I have code that does not delete from a database. The same code (cut an paste in the same file, but different function and having a different query) works. So, of course, I tested the query interactively. I echoed the query and did a cut and paste when interactively connect to the database. That one worked so it isn't the query since interactively it is seeing exactly the same thing as the code produces. Here is the code: function...

I am no PHP programmer. At my current job I made it known that I was no PHP programmer during the interview. Still they have given me a script to write with the understanding that it will take me a while (This information is just for general knowledge as I don't want anyone thinking I am trying to be dishonest with my intentions. Also, I do not portray myself as something I am not. I am a beginner.) Anyway, what the script needs to do is...

Ok, I have a program that reads the contents of a file (1 line, 5 '|' seperated items). Every so often (between twice a day, and 200 times a day), it rewrites the contents of that file. I also do a few database update queries whenever the file is written. I only open up the database connector if I need to update the database. The script itself runs every 30 seconds. My question, is that is it faster and more efficient to read the file...

I've converted a latin1 database I have to utf8. The process has been: # mysqldump -u root -p --default-character-set=latin1 -c --insert-ignore --skip-set-charset mydb mydb.sql # iconv -f ISO-8859-1 -t UTF-8 mydb.sql mydb_utf8.sql mysqlCREATE DATABASE mydb_utf8 CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;

I'm sure the answer to my question varies depending on the situation, but I am looking for a general "best practice". If I have an asp.net application and I load certain data from a database, should I use ViewState to store and reload the data, or should I load the data from the database on each postback? Assume for the sake of this question that I only care about performance, I don't care about ease of programming.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
