Server Components Can't Be Installed

I have a Windows XP machine that I have run SQL Server on in the past.
I recently re-formatted the hard drive and re-installed XP from scratch,
and now when I try to re-install SQL Server 2000, I get an error message
saying that the "server component is not supported on this operating
system. Only client components will be available for installation." I
have a hard time understanding why the server components can't be
installed on XP, especially since I've installed them before on this
same machine.

Can anyone explain why this might be, and what I can do (if anything) so
that it can be installed again?

Thanks.

What version of SQL Server are you installing? Developer, Personal,
and MSDE are the only versions that run on XP.

I have a need to become familiar with SQL Server 2000 for work. Needless to say I am new to SQL Server any version, but not IT in general. My employer has provided me with the SQL Server 2000 Personal disk from the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise kit as this is reported here on the MSDN web site to be the version that is supported on Windows XP. In fact so many of you kind people confess to having succeeded in doing it. I have tried...

I recently bought a copy of Visual C#.NET Deluxe Learning addition. I was under the impression that this comes with SQL Server Desktop Engine. I installed everything I should have (I think), but when I type the commands to grant access to SQL at the DOS prompt, it tells me that SQL Server doesn't exist. The actual error message reads as follows: SQL Server does not exist or access denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect()). The problem...

Hi, I am using a compare validator in asp.net application(c# code). This Custom validator is used for comparing a value enterd by the user against the primary key in the SQL database. IF the VALUE ENTERED BY THE USER EXISTS IN THE DB , then THE ERROR MESSAGE OF THE COMPARE VALIDATOR SHOULD BE DISPLAYED. For this, I used the reference artiicle "http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-...

Hello, in order to perform backup/restore MSSQL database using SMO, one needs to reference several namespaces in a backup class : using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common; using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo; Unfortunately, MSSQL 2005 and MSSQL Express keep them in different place. For MSSQL2005 they are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server \90\SDK\Assemblies and for MSSQL Express you can find them in C:

Hi All: I just setup a new machine with Vista Business Edition and IIS 7. I had to turn on IIS 7 attributes including the IIS Manager. Not sure what options I needed I turn them all on that even remotely look like I might need them. The IIS Manager looks total foreign to me but eventually I figure how to add a virtual folder. I then started making script files in html, javascript and vbscript. I would run them through IIS 7 using the...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
