As you are aware, assembly is very low level, almost HARDWARE level.
That being said, a lot of hardware drivers are still written in assembly.
I wouldn't say there's a "better replacement", but I believe you can also use
C. It all depends on what you're trying to do. Each programming language has a
particular purpose or niche.
Anyway, I say C because that is what's used for drivers now a days and that's also my preference.
C++, as far as I know, is not used in too many places other than educational organizations.
