What was used to Build FACEBOOK

5
Can anyone give me an idea of what programming language(s) was used to build a community site such as facebook? In particular I'm interested in the ability for businesses to generate pages and set a budget etc. This page explains a great deal but I also noticed java and .php.

Thank you in advance

I knew at one time but forgot, but why does it matter? Yahoo's shopping areas were originally done in LISP but you don't need LISP to make a store front.

You need to decide first the language / tool and the database ,you are going to use.

But what is recommended? A lot of applications are being developed on the facebook platform that can also be used in any site. Although I don't expect to duplicate facebook, I would like to know what it takes (what skills) to build a social network platform that syncs with facebook apps.

Sorry if my understanding of all of this is a bit lacking. Trying to learn.

Choose something you are more familiar with.

The most important thing is you should know what exactly you want to do and the limitations of technology.

Facebook has a developer platform so it might be best to look at what they require to interface with their APIs. I repeat though, it doesn't matter what language you use. Parts of the backend might be done in C/C++ but the front end has much more PHP or Java or Python or Ruby or whatever. C/C++ for speed. PHP, etc, for quicker development.
