Best practices for bug fixes in code for an open source project

Hello,

I have an open source project that i host in svn in sourceforge. i want to know what is the best way to fix a bug in the code and update the svn. i mean to say that if i have a line thats faulty. then should i just remove that line and enter the fixed code ? or should i comment out the buggy line and write some comments on the bug ?

please tell me how this is done in professional open source projects..

The great thing about SVN is that it keeps all previous copies of your code. So you can change your code in such a way that deletes lines and then you can put in your commit notes why you changed that line or what bug you were trying to solve when doing it. The best practice with SVN is to change the code so that it is as clean as possible with only the exact amount of lines of code that you need to get the job done and no more (including comments).
