Building Software in Windows

134 100+
I hope this isnt considered a technical question (then i shouldn't post here)

hi, i was building pidgin (the im) and i did everything needed, but this is what the last step says:
[im using windows but i have everything you need to build it]

Build Pidgin

Run the following:

$ cd $PIDGIN_DEV_ROOT/pidgin
$ make -f Makefile.mingw install

Now just wait and let your compiler do its thing. When finished, Pidgin will be in $PIDGIN_DEV_ROOT/pidgin/win32-install-dir.

what do i run that in? cmd, cygwin, my compiler(DevC++Bloodshed)
i dont understand (i have only used my compiler for my sources, etc)

thank you

If you are on Windows, why not just download the windows installation from here ? Why put yourself through the frustration of compiling the code if you don't have to?

Thanks for the note, but the real reason i wanted it was so i could edit the source, etc.
Would you happen to know what that means though?

thanks again

I'm pretty sure that's talking about building it in Cygwin - references to makefiles suggest a *nix environment, but I think ming works with Cygwin.

(Can you not just put the project into your bloodshed compiler and build it?)

thank you!
you were right for both of those: it is a cygwin function, but i will compile it in DevC++. (i was reading a tutorial on how to compile pidgin and i wonder why they just didnt give you the source)
saved me a bit of trouble and a lot of HD space
