Why is it called a 'slug'?

Ok, I'm intrigued. And a bit confused.

Why is it called a 'slug'?

For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, or are wondering why I'm asking about living boogers on a technical coding site, a slug is essentially a human-readable version of a primary key.

In blogging and other CMS, the slug usually makes up the 'permalink' for the document. For an example, see this document.

Heya, Plater.

Interesting. I checked out the article you posted, and I noticed a similar article about 'slug' as a news industry term.

It turns out that a 'slug' is also the term for an article headline in a newspaper, named after the physical 'slug' (or piece of lead) that is used in typesetting machines to space out paragraphs.

According to ABC News Radio, the word 'slug' possibly derives from a Scandinavian word meaning 'to move slowly' or (by extension) 'to be lazy'.

Slugs are definitely slower for a server to process than article IDs, that's for sure!

Thanks for the link; I think that about cleared it up for me.

The Dutch word for 'slug' (as in snail) is 'slak' which means exactly the same as
what you just described, which proves once again that Dutch happens to be the
mother of all languages.

kind regards,

Jos ;-)

When I was much younger, I used to repair traffic signals. A bunch of cars moving down the road was called a 'slug', too.

I disagree guys!

It was and always will be a slimey thing, that makes one hell of a mess in the garden.

Hi, We are developing an asp.net application, and we dynamically created certain literal controls to represent some read-only text for certain editable controls. However, recently we found an issue which is related to the repeater. In the code shown below, if I call Repeater1.Controls.Count in the OnInit (the code fragment was highlighted in yellow) , the viewstate for the repeater will be lost during the postback. You can re-produce this...

I have an application that creates a class. The class has unmanaged resources, so must end gracefully. How can I guarantee that the unmanaged resources are freed? I have looked at IDisposable, but this seems to rely on a call from the application, e.g. MyClass.Dispose()

I'm programming in VS C++.NET 2005 using cli:/pure syntax. In my code I have a class derived from Form that creates an instance of one of my custom classes via gcnew and stores the pointer in a member. However, I set a breakpoint at the destructor of this instance's class and it was never called!!! I can see how it might not get called at a deterministic time. But NEVER? So, I guess I need to know the rules about destructors. I would...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
