Mcaffee locking files for extended periods of time?

My network runs windows server 2008 and there are workstations that run windows 7 and some are still on XP. we have found that several times, we have gone to edit and then re-save a file, or rename a folder and windows won't let us because it says that the file is "locked or in use by another user".
Long story short, i downloaded the Unlocker tool to see what was locking it up and it turns out that McShield.exe is locking the files twice as it tries to scan them. Once I choose to force unlock the processes, we can do whatever we need to to the files, but we've left some files for over a week to see if McAffee would release them and it never does.

Has anyone ever experienced this or have any idea as to why it's happening?

It is in the firewall . Great a rule in McAfee to leave the file in question alone, or just change your scanning time to after hours then McAfee will not lock it to scan

Your AV (in this case McAfee) matches its known malware/virus signatures to system files. If you were to modify a system file while this scan is occurring, your AV might think it's because of the scan and delete it, so it locks the file. THere is something - either with the size or with it's signatures - that is causing McAfee to freeze.

I'd recommend running updates - both system updates and McAfee updates to ensure you have the latest signatures as well as the latest rules from McAfee to handle those types of files.

If it continues after an update, open a support case with McAfee.
