A common feeling, I suppose.

Dear All,
My name is Fidelio, I am an italian cameraman based in Qatar.
I am glad to start to be part of such a great community.
First of, I am new in programming and don't really have a computer knowledge that goes beyond the basics.
I have chosen the Ruby topic cuz it's one of those languages that I ve heard its very useful recently.
My question has to do with the feeling of both excitement and loss in front of such freedom that programming gives you in the beginning.
I came across coding with a friend that told me to do the Hour of code, so I thought that it was a nice idea to understand better how something so daily as a computer works.

I'd like to know as well from you what are the best steps and the most useful things I can learn in the very beginning, the ones that helped you, and the ones that you think didn' t help you that much, of an adventure that I hope will last long.

I have received such good help on this message board. I wonder if I might not get a little more help from you on this. I am at the point where I have two dictionaries, with information of a domain and a frequency of that domain. Now that I have the two, I want to delete each entry from one that the two have in common, leaving only those that are unique to the dictionary? Say I have a dictionary called domains_black

I just inherited a Java application with a fairly complex data model that does not yet have any indexes except those on primary keys. It is still in development and before I get to do any performance testing I want to put some default indexes on it. I realize that this a very vague request but it's better than nothing so I want to start with those that are generally a good idea and then tune those areas that require more fine grained...

One thing that keeps coming up in this forum is that standard C lacks many functions which are required in a workstation or server but not possible in an embedded controller. This results in a plethora of "don't ask here, ask in comp.x.y instead", for queries on functions that from the documentation available to the programmer appear to be part of the C language. I think largely because of this "least common denominator" C language...

Many thank to anyone who has the time to read an reply to this. Am a lone gun developer, I do not develop in team so this question comes from a place where I just don't really KNOW what others are doing, I just read, and what I read is ALL about Web Forms ONLY. I have been developing web sites since 1995, then it was all PERL/CGI, HTML on UNIX Now I am making the transition from ASP to ASP.NET. I am developing in C# now.

I have learned about compartmentalizing my code base using Class Libraries. I have my common code such as my ORM framework broken out into their own Class Libraries, which are referenced as projects from my Website. I also have a common set of DLLs I use across all of my applications. It would be great if I could put all of those DLLs into their own projects, and to reference that project from various solutions. The way my solution is...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
