If you write a file that has tab separated (maybe coma serperated, too) data with the .xls file extention, you can then:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. import os
  2. os.startfile("theFile.xls")
  3.
Then use excel to save the file in excel format.

For generation of advanced Excel forms there is a commercial alternative called SpreadScript.

Read Fredrik's post in the "Opening a word file in Python" and "webbrowser controls, manipulating javascript through Python" threads for discussion on the COM suport in the win32 extentions. Using COM you will aslo be able to save the file from python.
