Accessing digital camera

Does anyone know the best method for accessing a digital camera's file system? On my older camera, Xp recognized it as a storage drive. But with my new Canon, it isn't that easy. Is there a way, or should I go at it through the USB port?

I am new to Python, so forgive me if this is a simple fix.
