Przyszłość modułu string

JZ
Jak wiadomo (m.in. z http://www.python.org/peps/pep-3000.html#id26) są
plany aby z przyszłych wersji Pythona usunąć moduł string. Generalnie
staram się go nie używać, ale zastanawia mnie w jaki sposób ominąć
korzystanie z tego modułu podczas korzystania z map():

from string import upper
low = ['a', 'b', 'c']
high = map(upper, low)

Musze do map() przekazać funkcję. Jak jednak przekazać funkcję, która
jest metodą literału znakowego?

Wiem, że można co prawda użyć

high = [item.upper() for item in low]

ale jak bym chciał użyć map() to się nie da?

Mozna tak:

low = ['a','b','c']
map(str.upper, low)
['A', 'B', 'C']
