Is there a PHP-like safe mode?

is there some way to use Python similar to PHP's safe-mode, i.e.
restricting the file access to a certain directory and disabling
potentially dangerous functions like os.system()?

This: http://www.python.org/dev/doc/devel/lib/restricted.html

But... "In Python 2.3 these modules have been disabled due to various known
and not readily fixable security holes."
hmmmmm...
