java applets in python

Is it possible to write java applets in the python
language. is that what jython does? I would realy
like to write an applet but i dont know any java. I do
have some python experience. Can you write the
applets in pure python or do you have to know
a little java?

ifso is this done much? and is there any good documentation out there on how
to do it thanks.
