Default value for PYTHONPATH

Is there a default value for PYTHONPATH ?
I've installed Python on both Windows and Linux, and was surprised to see that
this variable is empty.

IS this normal ?

Yes. How would it be otherwise, particularly on Linux? I'm quite
glad "make install" doesn't try to edit ~/.bashrc.

Cheers,
