robotparser behavior on 403 (Forbidden) robot.txt files

I just discovered that the "robotparse r" module interprets
a 403 ("Forbidden" ) status on a "robots.txt " file as meaning
"all access disallowed". That's unexpected behavior.

A major site ("http://www.aplus.net/robot.txt") has their
"robots.txt " file set up that way.

There's no real "robots.txt " standard, unfortunately.
So it's not definitively a bug.

I just discovered that the "robotparse r" module interprets
a 403 ("Forbidden" ) status on a "robots.txt " file as meaning

That's specified in the "norobots RFC":

http://www.robotstxt.org/norobots-rfc.txt

- On server response indicating access restrictions (HTTP Status
Code 401 or 403) a robot should regard access to the site
completely restricted.

So if a site returns 403, we should assume that it did so
deliberately, and doesn't want to be indexed.
A major site ("http://www.aplus.net/robot.txt") has their
"robots.txt " file set up that way.
You should try "http://www.aplus.net/robots.txt" instead,
which can be accessed just fine.

Regards,
Martin

Hi, in one of my pages I want to return "403 Forbidden" to the client depending on some logic in my .aspx code-behind. So I set "Response.Status = 403". But apparently IE seems to ignore the status and displays the page as usual. When I cancel the output using Response.End(), nothing is displayed on the browser, but actually what I'm expecting is this usual white page showing the "Forbidden ask your administrator..." text.

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between undefined behavior and unspecified behavior? Though I've read what is given about them, in ISO standards, I'm still not able to get the difference. Python's "robots.txt" file parser may be misinterpreting a special case. Given a robots.txt file like this: User-agent: * Disallow: // Disallow: /account/registration Disallow: /account/mypro Disallow: /account/myint ...

For some reason, Python's parser for "robots.txt" files doesn't like Wikipedia's "robots.txt" file: False The Wikipedia robots.txt file passes robots.txt validation, and it doesn't disallow unknown browsers. But the Python parser doesn't see it that way. No matter what user agent or URL is specified; for that robots.txt file, the only answer is "False". It's failing in Python 2.4 on Windows and 2.5 on Fedora Core.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
