How to tell if invoked through IDLE or command line?

I've probably asked this before, but how can I tell within the program I'm
running if the .py files was involved by "run module" in IDLE or by using
the .py assoication with the python.exe program? I'd like to prevent running
under certain circumstances, or pop-up warnings, or change character
displays (some look different when run under IDLE).

sys.modules.key s() contains "idlelib" is a simple way of doing it,
assuming you never import idlelib otherwise (and why would you?)

import sys
if sys.modules.has _key("idlelib") :
print "Running under idle"
else:
print "Not running under idle"

Pythoneers, IDLE doesn't use the ps2 prompt ("..." in the command line interpreter) because it supports multiline editing. This issue has been discussed before, for example see Guido's explanation in this thread: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/idle-dev/2002-February/000863.html

For the past couple of months, Idle won't start when I invoke it. I am at a complete loss for why this is. When this happens, they python command line still starts, and python works fine otherwise. Most interesting to me is that a reboot won't fix the problem. But if I just try it again sometime later it will work. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running python 2.3 on windows 2000 professional.

This is sort of both Python and Vim related (which is why I've posted to both newsgroups). Python related: ---------------------- I have been frustrated for quite some time with a lack of a history command in IDLE (in fact with IDLE in general). Often I'll develop new code at the command line, testing each line as I go. Currently I have to copy and paste, removing outputs and the ">>>" at each line. Is it perhaps possible to make...

hey all, For my study I'm writing a simple threaded webcrawler and I am trying to do this in python. But somehow, using threads causes IDLE to crash on Windows XP (with the latest python distribution 2.5.1). Even a simple example such as this: import thread, time def doSomething():

New to Python, and just had something strange happen. I've been running my new code in IDLE running in windows. My IDLE version shows as 1.2.1, Python version displaying in IDLE is 2.5.1. I have been editing my code in UltraEdit then testing in IDLE by choosing open, then F5. I didn't see an easy way to refresh in IDLE, so each edit I've been closing the file (not IDLE itself), then opening again. Since IDLE does not keep track of...

Is it possible to pass command-line arguments when running a program in IDLE? The "Run" menu does not seem to provide that option. Thanks.

I'm trying to integrate the timeout function from here http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Cookbook/Python/Recipe/473878 into a long running automation script and the following code causes IDLE after 20 or 30 iterations in countTest. This is in 2.5, XP and there's no traceback. Could someone point me at the user error? Thanks in advance.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
