bug? file.write('\n' ) produces a carriage return and a line feed

jcb
The following code in Python 2.3
f = file('t.txt', 'wt')
f.write('\n')
f.close()

writes
0D0A to the file.

Is this a bug or expected behavior?
It sure took me by surprise.

If it is not a bug, is this behavior documented?

You're running Windows, right? Then, this is expected behaviour, as Windows
treats text and binary files different, extending \n to \r\n (as that is
the Windows end of line marker).

If you want to only write \n to the file, use:

f = file("t.txt","w b")

....

Hello, I am writing out a binary file. I figured that the number "10" is automaticaly converted to "OD OA" instead of "OD". "OD" and "OA" are line feed and carriage return. I know it does that if the file is opened in something else than in binary mode. But in my example below, the file is really opened in binary.

A friend's unix application produces various reports daily as flat text files. I link these files as tables in an Access (2000) database. After linking, all of these reports begin with a blank row; no problem. But the latest report I've asked, once linked, creates not only a blank row at the beginning, but a blank row after every row with data.

Hi, I have these string data: str_data1, str_data2, str_data3, which capture some value after a routine process A. Then I would like to write (append) these 3 string values into a text file each time after routine process A, the text file is named "mytext.dat" in following format with "#####" as separator. The maximum entries of them is 5. When reaching the fifth entry, it will delete the very first entry.

I'm using "FILE" function to write an array in a file and in this way I see that when is present a line feed (10) the function automatically insert a carriage return(13). Another question about "FILE" function is that when I open and read this file the function read only a little number of bytes and...

I have a text file that stores a number of records that I need to access in a vb.net application. Each of the fields that make up a record are of a fixed number of bytes. So for instance there is an address field of 240 bytes and there is an id field of 12 bytes. Where the data stored in a field does not fill the available number of bytes then spaces " " are inserted to fill the remaining bytes. There are no delimiters, just fields of a...

I'm trying to import data into a memo field by running an append query. The data is to be imported as if it was entered with separate lines in the memo field. I have tried inserting chr(13)s into the string that is being appended into the memo field but when appended, the data displays with a square box in place of a carriage return/line feed. I would like to import the data so that data is displayed in separate lines within the memo...

Assumptions I am assuming that you know or are capable of looking up the functions I am to describe here and have some remedial understanding of C programming. FYI Although I have called this article “How to Parse a File in C++”, we are actually mostly lexing a file which is the breaking down of a stream in to its component parts, disregarding the syntax that stream contains. Parsing is actually including the syntax in order to make...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
