Missing _sre.pyd in 2.4a2 Windows installer?

The subject line says it, really: I installed 2.4a2 using the MSI
installer on python.org, and I appear to be missing this file:

C:\Python24\DLL s\_sre.pyd
As a result, Python picks up the _sre.pyd from my 2.3 installation,
and I get the expected error about a bad magic number in that DLL.

I think I must be doing something stupid, but what, exactly?

TIA for any help

installer on python.org, and I appear to be missing this file:

C:\Python24\DLL s\_sre.pyd
That file doesn't exist in 2.4; the code it used to contain has been
folded into the core python24.dll (so _sre is builtin now, instead of
an extension module).
As a result, Python picks up the _sre.pyd from my 2.3 installation,
That shouldn't be possible, since _sre is a builtin now.
and I get the expected error about a bad magic number in that DLL.

Don't know, can't guess. Run Python 2.4 with the -v switch, then do

import _sre

You should see something like
import _sre # C:\Python24\lib \encodings\cp43 7.pyc matches C:\Python24\lib \encodings\cp43 7.py
import encodings.cp437 # precompiled from C:\Python24\lib \encodings\cp43 7.pyc
import _sre # builtin

If you don't see something like that, it's A Clue.

Aha. In a puff of logic, the error has now vanished. Mysterious...

Thankyou

Python 2.3.3 failed to import the _sre distributed with it. Said it couldn't find it but it could find, for instance, _csv which is in the same folder. I replaced the version of _sre.pyd of 2003Dec18 with the version of 2003Sep23 and the import succeeded. The windows installer added a couple of environmental variables: PYTHON_LIB looked suspect: c:\Python23\Libs\python22.lib

Hello NG, I realized, that my application won't start, if a referenced assembly is missing. Basically this is understandable, but since I destribute my applictaion without a setup, it can happen that I forget one or the other .dll. Since my app depends on a whole bunch of .dll it would be great, if the app could tell me which assemblies are missing instead of not starting at all.

I'm really starting to hate writing services -- or trying to, anyway. Why do I need to rename my project to the service name? Why do I need to set the "ServiceName" property to my service name? Why do I need to set a property within my code to the service name? Are all these required or am I just doing this for consistency purposes?

I've followed the section on MSDN on how to create a service but it seems that when i install it, i get an error about an attribute named RunInstallerAttribute.Yes missing. As far i haven't seen any info on that for a basic case of a service. Where should it go and what does it look like?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
