PostgreSQL DB Outage: logfile & trace question

Hey guy ever night it seems our DBs is locking up or like this morning crashing and restarts. Today is just my 4th day on the job, they have an offshore team that currently handles all their DBA and db work currently. I was brought on because they will be moving to a SQL Server environment soon and just kind of wanted me to work with these guys a little on the postgresql now to see whats in place.

The problem is, this offshore group is unable to tell us why the DB keeps crashing or any type of insite. I requested the log file and trace for the time of the outage last night. My issue is I want to help them but I’m just not familiar with postgresql.

So my question I wanted to ask is, are there any key error messages I should be on the look out for in a case like this where the DB keep going out. Any key words I should look for in the log file or trace?

Thanks,
