postgresq failed

i have instaled postgesql 7.1.11 on red hat el 5.3
after installtion its worked.
when i change the line in /etc/rc.d/init.d postgresql as export PGDATA=/var/lib/pgsql/nampetdb (export PGDATA=/var/lib/pgsql/data)
after that i could not restart the postgresql

the contents of postgresql log id


The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".
This user must also own the server process.

The database cluster will be initialized with locale en_US.UTF-8.
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to UTF8.

These are logs you get when RESTARTING server?! it rather looks like logs from initdb statement.
How did you restart the server, what command did you use?
