Postgres backup and restore

Can anyone tell me about database backup and restore.
There are lot many dumps available but i want to use tar/gzip backup.
also provide me information about restoring it in case of db crash.

Method i use should be easy and fast. From C# as front end in linux server I should be able to do this.

I will be more happy if somebody helps me on this scenario.
