How can I support multimedia with postgres?

diamond1
How can I modify the source code of postgres 8.1 to make it enable to support multimedia (images and voices)?
In fact, I have to modify the source code of postgres to support image & audio files (storing then retrieving)
even if it can be done without modifing the code
but first I should to write the algorithm which do that
I hope that was clear to you so you can help me

Thanks in advance
