initdb for postgresql 7.4 doesn't

Fedora Core 2 and postgresql 7.4.2-1. I try to /usr/bin/initdb -D
/var/log/pgsql/data
and I hang copying template1 into /var/log/pgsql/data/1. I've reinstalled
the rpms twice,
doesn't matter. Still hangs. Pl. advise. Thanks.

Part of the issue is a 3ware raid Escalade 7000-2 controller. I can initdb
on a partition that's on a plain old
eide (western digital) drive, but not over the raid controller. I can create
files no problem, however.
