how to read db schema with php

Sid
hi gang

i want to write a php script to automatically back up a postgres db. i need
to know how to read the db schema so i can find all tables and columns
programatically ( i don't want to have to manually revise the backup script
every time i add a new column or table). i've seen this done (pgAdmin)
before, but can't seem to find the methods used. anybody know?

tks
