PostgreSQL Roles, Groups and Policies.

11 New Member
-In PostgreSQL, what is the difference between a Role and a Group, exactly? How do they relate to one another, and which one(s) can be asigned to another?

-Can Policies be assigned to one or more aggregating entities in PostgreSQL, or are they just left on their own? If not, what can a Policy be assigned to?

While playing at a new/different configuration in my brand spanking new Pg 7.4 instance :-) I noticed in the documentation that GROUPs are not in the SQL Standard. So I go a looking and notice that Oracle does have ROLEs and that they are quite different in how they are used. Looking at the TODO list I see there is an entry about adding some GROUPy stuff so ROLEs can be implemented. How close will ROLEs be with these (object ownership)...

Okay the subject line explains a scenario I just had to tackle but I am looking for a better way. The current way: 1) Use forms authentication. 2) Query Active Directory and bind to a user object if no exception create custom authentication ticket. 3) But I also needed Role based security within the app. So I used SQL server 2k DTS package to get the members of the AD group and then created a

I'm trying to get a feel for what most people are doing or consider best practice. Given a mod_perl application talking to a PostgreSQL database on the same host, where different users are logging onto the web server using LDAP for authentication, do most people 1) have the web server connecting to the database using its own user account (possibly through ident), and controlling access to different database entities strictly through...

I'm looking to protect some pages using the Membership provider (ADS) built into .NET 2.0. In order to protect these pages, whose details are stored inside a SQL Server table with columns id,name,url,parentid etc. I need to link them into some roles, or groups. So only certain groups from our Active Directory can access certain pages. The problem I'm facing is that ASP.NET 2.0 seems to restrict you to using its Role provider model only....

Hi I haven a question concerning roles and membership in asp.net 2.0. I work for an online university, and we would like to implement role based security for our portal. Currently our university has 11 courses, which fall in 5 semesters, and each course is then subdivived into approx 5 or more groups, and in each group we have teachers, students, teacherAssistants. A quick calculation can approximate that we have to create about 825...

BACKGROUND: We've designed a Website for a client that will be deployed across multiple physical locations. The site will be hosted from a corporate NOC, and administered by the IT group there. The site's end-users tend to fill each others' roles on a pretty frequent basis. Their permissions in the system have to be extremely flexible. We initially wanted to use role-based security, defining concrete roles, but when we realized how these...

Hi, I am working in an organisation developing an asp.net application. The application and general use of .NET may well expand to other applications, so I need to start thinking about the arcitechture changes that will be needed to support restriction of visibility of resources or permissions to perform an action. Management of Groups etc, administration of users in groups. The obvious one which springs to mind is the use of Groups...

Hi, I currently have my application setup and built using Windows Authentication (WindowsPrincipal). For security checks, I simply do an IsInRole call on the Principal. The role permissions are hard- coded, something like this: private static string allowedReadRoles = new string { "Sales", "Ordering" };

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
