I think
Restart = stop and start
Reload = read again config files (actually pg_hba.conf file)

I've been stumbling over this, what I consider strange, behaviour. I installed mySQL on a Win2k machine and tried to change the root password, which didn't seem to work. I changed it this way: c:>mysql mysql> use mysql mysql> update user set password=PASSWORD('test') where user='root'; mysql> exit

Hi, I have had a site working for the last 2 years and have had no problems until at the weekend I replace my database server with a newer one. The database migration went like a dream and I had the whole db changed over in 1 hour. Since the upgrade I have been getting the following error message sporadically.

Should "restart" with pg_ctl or /etc/init.d/postgres cause postgres.conf to be reread? It doesn't appear to do so for me (another oddity - after "restart" the last line in the log is "database system is shut down"). "stop" followed by "start" works fine. Feature request - add "reload" to /etc/init.d/postgres :) CSN

Here's maybe a silly question, but I haven't seen it asked or answered so.. For those settings in the .conf file that say "this doesn't take effect until the database is restarted".. does that mean that "pg_ctl reload" also does not reload them? I imagine the statement is specific, and means what it says, but I'm curious anyway.. s'all...

While coding .aspx pages and testing them in IE, I sometimes get the error "Server Error in '/' Application". There is really no error. I have found that if I restart IIS and reload the same page everything works.
