Changing the design to suit my desires

This would be a close sampling as to what I have in mind doing in PHP.
But also including the text thing from the "butterflies" page.
What I do not yet understand is, how is the text actually transferred?
He uses $attext and I see no references as to how a particular part is
picked out.

With this method, it would seem to me that it would involve a lot less work
on my part.
Not to mention a smaller fingerprint for the page.

Any ideas on how I should tackle this problem this way?
