how to find if domain name exists

What is the best function to check if a domain name exists. I had read
somewhere that checkdnsrr() can do the job, but unfortunately it is
not giving correct result all the time. For example it reports that
netvoice.com does not exist but when I go to domain registration
websites they indicate that the domain name exist.

Thank you
John
