unexpected T_STRING, expecting ')' in CODE

I have zero experience in any website or php stuff.

I am the owner of a small gaming community and I wanted to edit the User Registration agreement.

I opened the ucp.php up in notepad++ and Found where I saw the text for the registration agreement page.

I then added a few things below where the original was.

The line with "Our forums are powered by phpBB"

That was default

I added the following lines

<br />
You have the ability,
<br />
After you register
<br />
Note that it is impossible

I get this error when I attempt to do a syntax check.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ')' in CODE on line 44 Errors parsing CODE

I have found many results with Google about expecting " or ;

But none for expecting ) With my non existent experience I am lost at why it would even need ) since there are no ( or ) in the lines I added.

Please enlighten me.
