phpmyadmin not accepting mysql password

In login fields of phpmyadmin , i am entering "root" and "password" , which are the correct username and password of mysql. But phpmyadmin is not logging me in, rather just showing the login page.

are you sure that you are trying the right password? did you tried to connect from local machine in cmd prompt?

and also check.. config.inc.php file located in phpmyadmin direcory.....
