List of available locale strings

Hi

I googled for this several times already; I am not sure if this is too
simple (for C proof programmers however) or too difficult to find...

I would like to display a list of available locale strings along with the
language names, such as: fr_CA - French (Canada). I neither find a complete
list on the web, nor a function that does this in PHP, some like
get_available_locales(). Can somebody point me to either of those? Or is
there a list accessible in the PHP installation (in a shared hosting
environment...)?

Thanks for a hint.

Is this too obvious?
