select strings from a table and return them as an array

I would like to select strings from a table and return them as an array
For example,
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1.  select new_array(name) from my_tbl
would return
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1.  String[] { name1, name2, name3, etc }
Is this possible with built-in SQL/MSSql SERVER functions?

im Currently using SQL SERVER 2005

There is pobably some way of doing it,
but this goes against the principle of SQL.

If you are using PHP anyway it is only a few lines of code to get the data into an array
