Need opinions.. Comments Script with captcha..

106 100+
Hi,
So I have a nice comments script so people can comment on the website's articles.

To protect against bots I came up with this:

User is prompted to answer a simple question (text/question captcha) > If answer is right form to comment is shown. User is told that the verification lasts for 2 weeks after that it will expire and he will have to repeat the process. (Based on cookies).

Is this a good idea?
Is it necessary?
The person for whom I am making the site doesn't understand why the need to use this..
And I'm beginning to wonder also..

P.S. I know this is stupid.. So if you dignify and give me a comment I'd appreciate.

Thanks
