Proper Format for REST service ?

Hi there,

not sure if this is the right forum for this. But as I am programming everything in PHP, I have the (strong) tendency to look for advice here... :-)

We've a large (UNEP GEO) Data Portal, which hosts >500 variables, covering each country of the globe with data, if possible, over the last 30 years or so. One can query and visualize data for GDP, Forest Cover, CO2 Emissions, Population etc., displaying them as a map, a table, a graph, etc.

Now, we have several existing SOAP services. In addition, or as a replacement to these, we're thinking about adding REST services.

Now, the question is what format would the Requests have? Something like this:

http://geodata.grid.unep.ch/table/vars/35/years/2005

where table is the type of display requested (map, graph could be other), vars=35 is the ID of the variable and 2005 the year.

What do you think? Does it make sense?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I don't see why not! That's how I'd do it.

It would return a standard or specific XML api or whatever.
