Do any of you experts use CakePHP or Zend ?

Hi,

I am just starting out with OOP PHP

I have done the Free tutes over at KillerPHP and have a good
idea of what its about.

I also visited the CakePHPO website and read all about components, behaviors and helpers and see that they have some core objects ready to use.
The conventions make sense ( if I can remember them !)

Just noticed that there is an example - building a blog.
I guess that following that would be the best way to really understand it all.

Has anyone done that example ?
Does it help ?

It will take some time to install cake and learn it, is it really
the best option ?

Or should I look at Zend? Are they similar ?

Thanks for any enlightenment :)

that depends upon what you want to do in the future. Using a frameworks usually makes coding easy and fast, but sacrificing flexibility to a certain point (you have to use the framework’s API)

nope, I’m not a professional, so fast coding is not my concern. and I’m still learning PHP.

The important thing in the frameworks is they provide you MVC structure. You can fill your code in it and make it work.
If you are on a small project, I would recommend you prefer not to use any framework and make a small one based on MVC that you think would be flexible enough for your future expansion of the code.

This can actually result into a discussion as many developers always prefer already one of the existing frameworks as they are too familiar with it to make it work for any project.

I would recommend CodeIgniter for a beginner learning OOP. It's a very simple and effective framework. Zend is huge, and CakePHP is for the more advanced programmer.
