memcache_get_version() failing, why?

The connection work will put this function doesn't work well (memcache_get_version) why i don't know, I'm new in memcache extension

$memcache = memcache_connect('localhost',80);
if($memcache){
    echo 'Connection successfully established<br />';
    if($ver = memcache_get_version($memcache)){
        echo $ver;
    }else{
        echo 'Couldn't get the version';
    }

Try connecting to the Memcache daemon via a different port (default is 11211).
