Heya, Faroz.

A blog is a specialized CMS. I'd start with learning how to build a basic CMS (don't worry about fancy features like versioning and translation; just get the basic save-content-in-a-database-and-retrieve-it behavior working).

For more information, give Google a whirl (http://www.google.com/search?q=php+cms+tutorial).

If you just want ideas on what to develop then there are loads of things you could do - just let your imagination run wild and have a go.

Try a cataloguing service - enabling people to catalogue there CD's books etc, create groups of people who can see catalogues that sort of thing. Or you could build a gift list - this could be created by the recipient or by someone else - so friends and family can see what to get and keep the list up to date.

See, there's two ideas off the top of my head. I may even build the second one myself.

The important thing is to start with the basics and build up from there. If you can already programme in another language the learning curve shouldn't be too steep.

Cheers
