PHP 5 RPM for RHLinux 9 ?

Is PHP Version 5 available anywhere as an RPM that I can install on
Redhat Linux 9 ?

The PHP.net web site specifically states that they do not provide such
a thing (they provide it only in the form of source code).

The latest thing I could find on rpmfind.net was version 4.2.2-17.2.
That is only a minor update to what I already have but I installed it
anyway.

I have version 5 installed and running on a Windows XP computer - I'd
like to get my Linux box equally up to date.

BTW, there's no way I'm gonna try to compile my own from the source
files. I'm a complete newbie in the Linux world. I don't have a
compiler and I don't want to even go there.

Thanks

You do know that RH9 has been declared end of life quite some time
ago? If you want to stick to packages you should upgrade to a version
that is still supported...

Well, I know that Fedora seems to be the latest and greatest but, no,
I didn't realize that RH9 was "dead". This set up is just R&D for me -
used mainly for the learning experience. The RH9 was installed from a
book I bought - although I have kept it up to date (I just downloaded
and installed 121MB of updates a couple of days ago). I suppose I
should go buy a book about Fedora and upgrade to that?

But even that is not going to get me version 5 of PHP is it?

I'll try to talk you into it anyway.

I have done that as a newbie as well. Its as easy as

../configure

once you've unpacked it with the appropriate arguments (--x --y) from
www.php.net

If it complains, install another rpm. repeat that until it compiles.
If you run into an error goto google and see what other people do or
leave out the functionality.

Worked for me.

HTH,

Jochen
Thanks

I've seen RPMs for Mandrake and some smaller distros but not for Red Hat or
SUSE.

Martin have told us, loud and clear, that he did not install
any C/C++ compiler. So, configure, and subsequent steps
will not work for him.

I am not sure, but compilation of PHP5 might may require
compilation of Apache. Is that true ?

It asks for Apache 2.0.44 or larger and the version bundled with Red Hat 9
is 2.0.40.

I think it's almost impossible to upgrade PHP in Red Hat 9 using RPMs. The
closest you can find is Fedora packages--and the dependency tree makes you
upgrade so many packages (in my case, even the POP3 server) that it's
simply easier to upgrade to Fedora*. Of course, upgrading is an option for
a testing machine you have at home; it isn't for a SSH-managed production
box.
(*) In any case, there isn't a Fedora version that includes PHP 5 yet.
