Re: Search result ranking

I prefer third-party search engines or my own. A simple index-based
engine with ranking is not that hard to write. Of course it's not that
powerful than a professional engine, but usually enough to start with.

A while ago I used the Google Search via their SOAP API - it was a pain.
The results where often not up-to-date, the response from the server was
slow and the API allowed only to get up to 10 search results at a time.

Interesting. I installed a google search engine on a site for a
customer and it's working quite well. Sure, it takes a bit for the
pages to get updated in the Google database, but this site doesn't
change all that often, anyway.

Just curious: Is it using direct API calls or Google's web interface
with a filter to restrict the search to the given site? The latter might
work better, but would have made it more difficult for me to embed the
search results into my site layout, while the first approach had the
mentioned drawbacks and uses another search index (from what I know).

I don't know if this has changed meanwhile, though. Currently I don't
need a full site search.

Just a form with some hidden fields which is submitted to Google. You
can find the info on the Google site. Don't have a link handy, but it
should be under "webmaster tools" or similar.
