A good book to get you started is Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours (Sams
Publishing). The Sams website is http://www.samspublishing.com.

I have found the best way to learn a new anything is from reading a
book. Learning it one bit at a time from the web is not the most
efficient. Web is good to find specific answers to your problems. So
I second the above post.

I've had this one, but it was quite a struggle. Not in means of
difficulty (it is a very good book), but it's just more than getting
started. When you finish chapter one, you can't remember what was on
page 4...

I tried a smaller one (Visual quickstart guide, PHP for the worldwide
web - Larry Ullman). It didn't go "deep", but I found myself more
behind the screen, applying the things I've just learned, and in this
case trying it over and over again is a good way to learn. And I think
you can learn more from other sites and bigger books when you have the
basic skills in your head.

But this can vary from person to person :)
