merging portions

not sure if this is even possible. but i will ask any way

if you have a submit form with field FirstName and field Lastname,
can you update the table fields FirstName and LastName and at the same time update another field that takes the first 5 characters from LastName and concatenate it to the first 2 characters of the FirstName - and have that entered into a field name Login.

for example:
Jonathan Brinkles
would get updated into 3 fields
LastName=Brinkles
FirstName=Jonathan
Login=BrinkJo

If you want to display that abbreviated userid while having typed the lastname and firstname and not doing a submit: yes you can. But you must use someting that triggers that db update process. So you'll have to use an Ajax setup for that. Process is like:

1. enter lastname en lastname
2. hit some button
3. trigger JS function
4. JS function goes to server db program
5. server constructs login name
5. db updated with lastname, firstname and login name
6. login name sent back to client
7. client displays login name on screen

Something like that roughtly.
