Zend vs PHP extension

For example, in http://eaccelerator.net/wiki/InstallFromSource

It said: ..eAccelerator can be installed both as Zend or PHP
extension..

In fact, what are the difference? Is all extensions can be installed
Zend or PHP extension?

Thanks.
