I don't know about PEAR::db, but PEAR::mdb goes beyond what ODBC does...
If your server has the RDMS's functions available (ora_*, pg_*, mysql_*,
msql_*, etc.), MDB will use them where appropriate. This helps with
performance as well as allowing for RDMS-specific features that are
emulated for others... Of course, I haven't dug through the code, that
is just my understanding of it...
